Cozumel is known for its scuba diving and crystal clear waters. If you are looking for beaches and temples in the same tour, this area of the Yucatan is probably your best bet.
In 1517, Francisco Hernandes de Cordoba landed here with three ships from Cuba.
The natives who called themselves "Maya" were captured and forced into slave labor. The great quantity of gold that was found adorning their temples was said to have come from the "City of the Gods." That area, now known as Teotihuacan, is close to Mexico city.
